What We Can Learn From Bill Cosby About Organizational Problem Solving

I don’t know if you are like me, but I was extremely saddened to see this picture and hear the news that Actor, Comedian, Business Man and Philanthropist, Bill Cosby had been charged with aggravated indecent assault and faces 10 years in prison.  No matter what people are saying about him, he has been an icon for decades.  It just hurts me to see someone of his influence go down like this.  I just really pray  the justice system really does serve justice, but I digress.

Now, this article is not going to debate did he or didn’t he.  It’s really about getting down to the root of business.

If you really want to know what’s going on here, there, or anywhere, follow the money.

You’ve probably heard me say this before and I will say it over and over again,  numbers tell a story and they never lie.  People lie, but numbers don’t, so follow the money and get to the root.

It is my theory that the root of this case, the root of the extremely delayed allegations, the root behind the purpose this has only recently made its way to public awareness, and the root behind why Mr. Cosby is having his day in court is because the trends and trails of his money ends in concerning places.

The same holds true for plateauing organizations.

When clients come to me to solve a problem in their business, such as plummeting profits, decreasing margins, less than steady productivity, or rising expenses, I begin my sleuthing and problem solving by analyzing the numbers.  It may sound a bit forensic  and it is.  Trends, trails and transactions help me pinpoint the reality behind the story.  Analyzing the numbers tell me where businesses have been and where they are headed.  They help me determine where training may be necessary and where “Houston, we may have a problem”!  They help me understand where the CEO’s head and heart are.  Once I know where the problems lie, I can then build a strategy to resolve the issue.

I would only wish it was this simple to help Mr. Cosby out of his dilemma….but maybe it is.  Nonetheless, the next time you have a problem in your business, go back to the numbers and analyze the reality behind them.  I can guarantee if you do, you won’t have to worry about a day in court.
