I HATE TRAFFIC!
Or at least that’s what I thought.
Washington DC has been ranked as one of the US cities with the worst traffic and according to a report made by the Business Insider, DC has to contend with the worst traffic in America! I certainly felt that pain yesterday.
I live in the suburbs of Washington, DC and a very easy 30 minute drive from downtown. However, yesterday it took me a whopping 90 minutes to get into the city! Unbelievable!!
I like to give myself some time to get to my destination and get settled before I walk into most meetings, so I left my house at 7:00 am for an 8:30 am meeting with a strategic partner. I even accounted for traffic, or so I thought. Every corridor leading into the city was a jam packed parking lot. Believe me when I say I tried every one of them. Forced to settle on one final route, I certainly had some time to think.
If you know me, then you know my mantra: numbers tell a story and they never lie.
WHAT STORY IS THIS TRAFFIC REALLY TELLING?
One logical cause for the traffic delays yesterday could certainly have been the fact that all of the school districts have now resumed. This means more traffic on the roads as parents rush to drop their children off at school and then make their trek to work.
Or it could have been a series of accidents. But as the story always goes, I never saw signs or remnants of any accidents: no sirens, no police cars, no vehicles sitting on the side lines, nothing.
COULD IT BE THERE WAS MORE BUSINESS IN THE DIRECTION I WAS GOING?
Then the thought popped into my head. Maybe there is business awaiting in the direction I am headed. Certainly these cars mean people are going someplace important. If I were to continue following the traffic, could it lead me to a pot of gold?
TRAFFIC IN THE BUSINESS WORLD IS A GREAT THING!
Webster give multiple defines of the word traffic with one of them being the act of dealing or trading in something illegal. Of course I prefer to take out the word illegal. That then leaves the act of dealing or trading!
Eureka! Traffic is leading me to places where there is dealing or trading: BUSINESS. Sounds like my kind of place!
Businesses need traffic to survive. They need email traffic, employee traffic, website traffic, customer traffic, marketing traffic. You name it, businesses thrive off of it.
HOW MUCH TRAFFIC DO YOU ENCOUNTER IN YOUR BUSINESS?
Traffic is one of those key business indicators you should be monitoring on a regular basis. Dips and spikes can serve as market predictors and can help you manage or implement change within your organization.
My aha moment today has lead me to the realization that traffic is not a bad thing. In fact, being in it means I am going with the flow of business.
